Snowdrop

Week beginning 5th December 2022

This week in maths, children have been learning their 3, 4 and 8 times tables. They have learnt new sings to help them remember this and have then applied there learning to solve multiplication facts in these times tables.

In English, children have used their box up plans to write an explanation text about how to survive the Stone Age. Children have been working hard to include the features of an explanation text including facts and technical vocabulary.

Children have also been experimenting the permeability of rocks. Children completed a science experiment to see how rocks reacted in water and decide if they were permeable or impermeable. Children will then use these results to create a bar chart next week.

For this week’s spellings, we are looking at words with the short ‘i’ sound spelt with ‘y’

Children will take part in a spelling quiz on these words on WB 12.12.22

Week beginning 28th November 2022

This week in maths, children have been learning all about division and how we can divide by sharing and grouping. Children have used concrete resources such as cubes and counters to divide amounts and then linked this to their understanding of division.

In English, children have continued their learning about explanation texts. They have been creating sentence with cause and effect conjunctions based on the model text, They have then started to box up their ideas for our own text about how to survive the Stone Age.

Children have also started to make their stone age puppets. Children have used their design and have made their template with felt. They have started to sew these pieces together. In the next few weeks, they will begin to add more detail such as clothes, eyes and hair.

For this week’s spellings, we are looking at using the suffix -ly (exception words)

Week beginning 21st November 2022

This week in maths, children started their learning on multiplication and division. Children have been identifying equal groups and exploring multiples of 2,5 and 10.

In English, children have started their new unit of work about explanation texts. Children have rehearsed their new text all about how to make fire in the Stone Age. They have then identified features and linked their learning from our trip to write sentences using rainbow grammar.

On Wednesday, children went on a school trip to Creswell Crags. Once we arrived, children took part in three activities. Activity 1 allowed children to become palaeontologists and look at the bones of prehistoric animals. Children decided if they were a predator or prey and then put the bones back together to create the skeleton of the animal. Children also learnt survival skills and practiced using tools. Finally, children were given a cave tour. Children were able to understand where people would live and how they would use the cave to survive.

For this week’s spellings, we are looking at using the suffix -ly when the root word ends with ‘ic’ or ‘al’

This week, children have started to prepare for their trip to Creswell Crags. In our reading sessions, children have read a selection of information about the activities they will complete and discovered new vocabulary.
