Week beginning 31st October 2022

This week in maths, children have continued with their addition and subtraction learning, focusing on using column methods. Children have learnt about exchanging 10s and 100s to solve their questions.

In English, children have started to learn about our new text, Stone Age Boy. Children have rehearsed the text using out story map to create actions to remember the story. Children have also focused on setting descriptions, writing their own about a cave and finding the features from different examples.

To introduce our new history topic, children completed a Stone Age day. Children learnt about the timeline of the Stone Age and were taught about the theme of ‘pre history’. Children then became hunter gatherers and discovered the assets and threats that Stone Age people would find within the school grounds. Finally, children took part in a carousel of activities including cave art, making stone age tools and

Week beginning 10th October 2022

This week in maths, children have continued with their addition and subtraction learning, focusing on using a number line to subtract ones crossing 10 and 10s crossing hundreds. Children have now started to apply all their learning to adding numbers using columnar methods.

In English, children have linked their learning about Black History Month and have independently completed their persuasive write about how to be a good ally. Children have then edited and compared their work to their ‘cold write’. Children have also published their work as part of our take care writing display.

To celebrate Black History Month, children have been learning about artist Sonia Boyce. Children have completed ERIC questions based on her artwork and have also created artwork to show what is important to their culture and identity.

Week beginning 3rd October 2022

This week we have been focusing on the JC Promise ‘Take care of my work’

This week in maths, children have continued with their addition and subtraction learning, focusing on adding 1s, 10s and 100s and began to look at adding 1s crossing 10. Children have applied their understanding of number lines to support them with this.

In English, children have linked their learning about Black History Month and have started to create a persuasive text about how to be a good ally. Children have researched using the story ‘Little allies’ and created a box up plan for their persuasive write.

To celebrate Black History Month, children have taken part in a workshop exploring the lives of people from ethnic minorities. Children were able to look at a range of artefacts, pictures and play a steel pan drum to explore what life was like for others when they first arrived in our country.

For this weeks spellings, we are looking at homophones and near homophones.

Week beginning 26th September 2022

This week we have been focusing on the JC Promise ‘Take care of myself and others’

This week in maths, children have concluded their place value learning by counting in 50’s. Children applied their knowledge of the 5 times tables to identify how this could help them to count in 50’s. Additionally, children have started their new topic about addition and subtraction, focusing on number bonds to 10 and adding and subtracting 1s and 10s.

In English, children have started to learn their new persuasive text about healthy eating. Children have used a story map to create actions to verbally rehearse the story, explored the features of a persuasive text and used rainbow grammar to create sentences about healthy eating,

Children have also continued to develop their skills in rounders. Children completed a carousel of activities focusing on under arm throwing, over arm throwing, hitting the ball, fielding and throwing to team members. Children will continue to develop this into rounders games in the coming weeks.

Week beginning 19th September 2022

This week we have been focusing on the JC Promise ‘Be Positive and Proud’

This week in maths, children have continued learning all about place value. We have been comparing and ordering numbers using dienes and place value counters

In English, children have written their innovated version of our story, Flat Stanley. Children have completed a class write and independently written their own character description of Stanley. Children have worked very hard on this and have used their own original ideas to make the story more exciting for their reader.

Children have also continued to develop their drawing skills in art this week, creating a drawing using pen. Children have been working on their observation skills, focusing on what they can see and using a range of equipment such as pencil, charcoal and pen to create their artwork.
