Week Beginning: 28th February

World Book Day

We have had an exciting week in Rosemary Class!

On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day and it was brilliant to see the children dressed up as their favourite characters. Throughout the day, we read many books alongside different activities. In the morning, we created our own bookmarks and completed a story quiz. In the afternoon, we took part in a World Book Day parade to show everyone our costumes. Throughout the week, we have also had some exciting visitors. Each day, we have had a different member of staff visit us as a secret reader to share their favourite story with us. We have had a brilliant time!

The celebration continues with a challenge on Seesaw. When you log on, using your logins in your Communication Diaries, you will find a PowerPoint with photographs of members of staff hiding behind a book. Use your detective skills to find out who the Masked Readers are and submit your answers to have a chance of winning a prize!

What have we been learning about this week?

In Maths, we have continued to look at statistics and we have focused on pictograms and block diagrams which have a key or scale which counts in 2s, 5s and 10s. This learning has continued in computing and we have entered the data into a digital pictogram. Next week, we are moving onto our next unit of ‘Shape’.

In English, we have been reading ‘The Greedy Zebra’ and we have been describing the main character together. We have been looking at what we need to think about when writing a character description and what writer’s tools we can use to make our writing interesting We have also created an emotions graph to think about how the Greedy Zebra feels at different parts of the story and we have used ‘hot seating’ to ask the Greedy Zebra questions to find out what the character likes and dislikes. This learning has continued in our whole class reading sessions that have focused on the vocabulary in the story and answering questions about the text. Next week, we will be on stage three of our writing process, ‘Independent Application’. We will be independently planning, writing and publishing our own character description of the Greedy Zebra, using our learning from the past two weeks and our take care writing.

In science, we have looked at African animals that live in the habitat of the savanna. We have been researching facts about different animals and we have grouped animals based on if they are a carnivore or herbivore. We continued our learning about animals in geography and we have looked at animals in the continent of Asia. We have been learning about and comparing giant pandas, red pandas and urban foxes.

We have also continued learning about African art and music. This week, we have looked at Ndebele Art and we have created some of our own using different shapes and colours. We have also continued looking at the Carnival of the Animals in music.
